Food and population growth seem to go together regardless of what species we are talking about. Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Birds, Insects, it hardly matters which category we are in, food supply affects the population growth, and it’s all about the food chain and adaptation whether the species survives, collapses or adapts – Darwin articulately made mention of this, and today no one refutes such observations.
Food yes, it has an effect on population growth, for instance scarcity. With humans, when they eat the wrong foods they have health issues like Diabetes causing lower sperm counts, meaning fewer offspring but just as much fun practicing without actually conceiving. Our GMO foods will either be a net positive or net negative on population growth and we as of yet do not know which. Not long ago, I ask a technologist; “What are your thoughts on the new 3D Printing of food – kind of reminds me of the Star Trek version of the ‘food synthesizer’ and not that I want to put chefs out of business with more robotics in the workplace, but it is interesting?”
Mr. Nevejans, a think tanker type and culinary guru writes; “I didn’t know diabetes had an effect on sperm count, not too much diabetes in my family. GMO corn can have similar properties, it might sound cruel to some people, it actually sounds more like smart thinking. We cannot grow indefinitely on a finite planet. I don’t think there is something different about 3D printing than any other industrial prepackaged food. On the contrary, it might even make people more aware of what they eat, it might also be easier to promote vegetarian dishes, since they could make it look and taste like anything you want.”
Yes, some good points right? I totally agree on the 3D printing thing, it might really wake people up as to what is in the food they eat, especially if they are one’s creating it. Wow, that might be the way to get humans to eat right? This brings a whole new spin on “preparing a meal” and maybe we are about to enter a future where types of food and abundance of supply change the entire dynamic of human population growth. Since everything effects everything else, we will have to keep an eye on GMOs and 3-D printing of food stuff and then study the statistics and research this issue to know for sure. Think on it.
Of all the truly fun things to do in Florida, at the top of our too-do list every year is the Disney Food and Wine Festival, normally running from late September to early November. In 2013 they will start on Sept. 27, and it will run through Nov. 10. It is made up of about 30 kiosks located at the Epcot world showcase, each one representing the unique food from their individual country. It does get crowded, especially during the weekends, but all of the lines move very quickly.
Your biggest issue will be to decide what countries you want to visit, because even if you overeat, which you probably will, you won’t be able to sample even close to everything. Portion sizes are small, but still larger than bite-size. It is probably best to plan on making it a more than one day experience.
An example of some of the food possibilities are a lobster and seafood fisherman’s pie in Ireland (plus of course Guinness, the popular Irish dry stout), New Zealand’s lamb meatball with spicy tomato chutney, and from South Africa seared filet of beef with mashed sweet potatoes and braai sauce. The price ranges for these items are in the $4 to $6 range, with some of the beverage items usually running a little more, depending on size and quality. These are mini-portions, but you do get enough for a good culinary experience. The kiosks at Epcot are the most popular part of the wine and food festival, but not all. There are signature dining experiences with renowned chefs, wine seminars and culinary demonstrations, and what they call “Eat to the Beat” concert series, which includes nightly performances by pop celebrities. We have attended the Party of the Senses, which is only offered on Saturdays, and it is quite a food extravaganza. But be advised that it can get quite costly. There are many more to choose from, but they do sell out quite quickly, so don’t wait until the last-minute.
A couple of bits of advice that I would give: first, pace yourself. After you have been there a few times you will have an idea of where you want to go to find your old favorites. But if you stop at every booth that you are attracted to, you’ll never make it half-way around. The second is to purchase a prepaid card at Guest Services, and you can always get it refilled at the booths. But you will be making many small purchases, and you certainly don’t want to get bogged down with dealing with cash or personal credit cards. Just one swipe of the card and you can go back to merrily eating and drinking around the world.
